Oshibana – exhibition and workshops with Japanese master Sanae Nagashima
Discover the magic of Japanese art that gives flowers a new life!
This year’s Japanese Days in the Průhonice Botanical Garden will bring a unique novelty. For the first time, you will have the opportunity to meet the Japanese master of oshibana, Sanae Nagashima, who is coming to the Czech Republic directly from Japan to introduce this fine traditional art and share her experiences during practical workshops.
In addition to the workshops, you will also be able to admire a small exhibition of her original works, which will show how far the oshibana technique can be pushed.

What is oshibana?
Oshibana (押し花) is the traditional Japanese art of creating paintings and decorations from real pressed flowers and plants.
Each petal, leaf or blade of grass, after being carefully dried, retains its natural color and unique shape. The artist then assembles them into paintings or decorative objects, much like a painter creates a painting with a brush – only instead of paints, he uses nature itself.
Each work is an original. It is not a print or a painting, but real flowers that gain new life thanks to this technique.

Sanae Nagashima
Sanae Nagashima has been practicing the art of oshibana for over 30 years. She studied under the guidance of the prominent Japanese master Nobuo Sugin, the founder of the modern oshibana movement, and gradually developed her own unique style based on sensitive work with natural materials.
In her work, she uses real pressed flowers, leaves and other plants, from which she creates delicate paintings and decorative objects. Each of her works is an original that captures the beauty of nature in its natural form.
In addition to her own work, she has also been teaching for a long time. For more than three decades, she has been teaching oshibana techniques to students of all ages and helping to spread this traditional Japanese art not only in Japan but also abroad.
Her works have been presented at a number of prestigious international exhibitions and festivals, such as the Philadelphia Flower Show (USA), Japan Expo Paris (France) or Japan Matsuri London (Great Britain).
She is coming to the Czech Republic for the first time at the invitation of the Czech-Japanese Society. Visitors to Japan Days will have a unique opportunity not only to admire her original works, but above all to learn directly from the Japanese master during practical workshops.
