Japanese Calligraphy – Shodō
Shodō (書道), the Japanese art of calligraphy, literally means “the way of writing”. It combines the beauty of Japanese characters with brush technique, composition, concentration and personal expression.
The Czech-Japanese Association offers regular calligraphy courses for both beginners and more experienced students. No previous knowledge of Japanese is required.
About the Courses
Beginners learn the basic principles of Japanese calligraphy, including how to use the brush and other traditional tools, how to create individual strokes and how to work with the balance and composition of characters.
More experienced students can continue developing their technique, explore different styles of Japanese calligraphy and work on more advanced compositions.
All necessary calligraphy materials and tools are available during the lessons, so beginners do not need to purchase their own equipment before joining.
Course Format
We offer both regular weekday courses and Saturday courses. The format and frequency of lessons differ depending on the course.
Regular weekday lessons take place in Palác Lucerna in central Prague, while Saturday lessons are held at the Czech-Japanese Association, Na Můstku 8, Prague 1.

Would You Like to Join?
Our regular courses are primarily taught in Czech. However, Japanese calligraphy is highly visual and practical, and depending on the instructor and current course availability, participation for English-speaking students may be possible.
