Japanese Ink Painting – Sumi-e
Sumi-e (墨絵) is the traditional Japanese art of ink painting. Using black ink, water and a brush, artists create a wide range of shades, lines and textures through variations in brush pressure, movement and concentration of ink.
Rather than attempting to reproduce every detail, sumi-e places emphasis on simplicity, expression, balance and the use of empty space. A few carefully placed brushstrokes can capture the essential character of a subject.
Our courses are suitable for beginners as well as students with previous experience. No knowledge of Japanese is required.
About the Course
Students learn the basic techniques of working with traditional brushes, ink and water and gradually develop greater control and confidence in their brushwork.
The lessons introduce different techniques and traditional subjects, allowing students to explore composition and the expressive possibilities of Japanese ink painting.
All necessary materials and practical information are explained as part of the course.
