Course on the Japanese Sword
The Course on the Japanese Sword is organised by Nihontō Kenkyūkai – the Society for the Study of the Japanese Sword, part of the Czech-Japanese Association.
The course is intended for beginners and those with some previous knowledge who would like to explore the Japanese sword in a broader context – as a historical, cultural, religious, technological and artistic object.
About the Course
The course provides a systematic introduction to the study of the Japanese sword. Topics include basic terminology and classification, the historical development of Japanese swords, traditional manufacturing techniques, important features used in their evaluation, and their cultural significance.
Attention is also given to tsuba (sword guards) as works of art, systems of certification, recommended sources for further study and the basic principles of sword attribution.
The course combines lectures with practical sessions using original Japanese swords. Participants learn about proper etiquette, handling and maintenance and have an opportunity to apply their knowledge through guided kantei – the examination and assessment of a Japanese sword.
Language and Availability
The course is taught in Czech only and is not offered on a regular schedule.
