We warmly invite you to the 16th edition of Japan Days at the Průhonice Botanical Garden – once again taking place throughout the entire weekend!
End your summer with the scent of Japan | 5–6 September 2026
On the first weekend of September, the Průhonice Botanical Garden will once again become a place where the beauty of nature meets traditional Japanese culture. On 5–6 September 2026, enjoy two days filled with music, art, workshops, food and unique guests travelling to the Czech Republic directly from Japan.
This year’s festival will feature a rich cultural programme including traditional kyogen theatre, energetic wadaiko drumming, an ikebana exhibition, the Yokai Parade of Japanese spirits, demonstrations of Japanese arts and crafts, and dozens of stalls offering authentic food and original products.
Among this year’s special guests will be Sanae Nagashima, a master of the traditional Japanese art of oshibana, and Senju Einojo, a master of the Nihon Buyo Senju school, who will perform on the traditional three-stringed instrument, the shamisen.
Whether you are drawn to Japanese culture, nature, delicious food, or simply want to spend an enjoyable day in beautiful surroundings, Japan Days offer something for the whole family.

Get inspired and try some traditional Japanese arts for yourself. We have prepared several workshops led by experienced instructors and special guests from Japan. Places are limited, so we recommend booking in advance.
- IKEBANA
The programme of Japan Days at the Průhonice Botanical Garden will, of course, include popular ikebana workshops led by the Prague Sogetsu Study Group.
During this one-hour workshop, you will learn the basics of the Sogetsu School and create your own seasonal ikebana arrangement under the guidance of experienced instructors. The workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as flower lovers who would like to discover a new perspective on floristry and Japanese culture.
All plant materials are included in the price, while vases and tools will be provided for use during the workshop. You can take the flowers and branches home with you afterwards.

- OSHIBANA
A unique new addition to this year’s festival will be workshops in the traditional Japanese art of oshibana, led directly by Japanese master Sanae Nagashima.
Oshibana is the delicate art of creating decorations and pictures from pressed flowers and plants, combining an appreciation of nature with patience and creativity. Under the master’s guidance, you will have the opportunity to create your own original piece and discover an art form that is only very rarely presented in the Czech Republic.
Several different workshops will be available, ranging from decorating greeting cards and making bookmarks to creating original brooches with pressed flowers. All workshops are suitable for complete beginners, and all materials will be provided.
Places in each session are limited, so we recommend booking in advance.
- URASENKE TEA CEREMONY – SATURDAY, 5 SEPTEMBER 2026
Become a Guest at a Japanese Tea Gathering
One of this year’s new experiences will be intimate tea gatherings led by Markéta Sōkei Reiter Fujita, a certified teacher of the Urasenke school who has practised the traditional Japanese tea ceremony for more than thirty years.
The tea ceremony is much more than preparing a bowl of matcha. It is a tradition more than four hundred years old, bringing together hospitality, aesthetics, concentration and the ability to fully appreciate the present moment.
During this intimate gathering, you will take your place as a guest and observe the preparation of tea from close range. The tea will be prepared using bonryaku temae, a simplified form of tea preparation in the Urasenke tradition.
The experience includes a traditional Japanese sweet (wagashi or higashi) and a freshly prepared bowl of matcha usucha. Each gathering is limited to 10 participants, so advance booking is recommended.
Way of Tea Workshop
Would you like to explore the Japanese tea ceremony in greater depth? Join a hands-on workshop led by Markéta Sōkei Reiter Fujita, a certified Urasenke teacher with more than thirty years of experience.
During the workshop, you will try the fundamentals of the Japanese tea ceremony yourself. You will learn the proper way to receive a bowl of tea, the basics of tea etiquette, how to handle tea utensils, and how to prepare matcha following the bonryaku temae procedure.
You will also discover the concept of mitate, which demonstrates how the spirit of the tea ceremony can be brought into an everyday home environment.
The workshop takes place in a small group seated at tables and is suitable for complete beginners as well as anyone who would like to experience the Way of Tea actively rather than simply as a spectator. Capacity is limited to 10 participants, so advance booking is recommended.
- URASENKE TEA CEREMONY – SUNDAY, 6 SEPTEMBER 2026
Take a moment to pause amid the beauty of the Průhonice Botanical Garden and immerse yourself in the world of the Japanese Way of Tea.
Urasenke Prague, which has been introducing the traditional Japanese tea ceremony to the Czech public for many years, will guide you through demonstrations of matcha preparation. The programme will also include a short workshop where you can learn the basics of tea etiquette, discover the proper way to receive a bowl of tea, and try whisking matcha yourself.
Come and discover that the tea ceremony is not simply about preparing a drink, but a path towards tranquillity, mindfulness and harmony.
- SPIRAL BOUQUET WORKSHOP – SUNDAY, 6 SEPTEMBER 2026
This year’s Japan Days at the Průhonice Botanical Garden will feature not only traditional Japanese ikebana but also a workshop introducing the classic European technique of arranging a spiral bouquet.
Under the guidance of experienced florist Kamila Vondráková, you will spend an hour learning one of the fundamental techniques of floristry, used to create strong, harmonious and elegant bouquets. Best of all, you can take your hand-tied bouquet home with you.
The workshop is suitable for beginners as well as all flower lovers.
Kamila Vondráková has worked in floristry for more than 30 years. Her work combines extensive professional experience with a sensitive approach to natural materials, and she enjoys passing on the joy of working with flowers to new generations.

The event takes place at the Průhonice Botanical Garden of the Institute of Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences, which is located within the grounds of Průhonice Park and Castle. It is not the Dendrological Garden, which is also located in Průhonice.

A regular ticket to Průhonice Park is required to enter the grounds. The event can also be accessed through the entrance gate on Lesní Street.
